John chapter 3 verse 16 is probably the best known verse in the Bible. Its twenty five words are full of gospel truth and someone once said it is the Gospel in a Nutshell.

In it we have:

THE HEART OF GOD REVEALED. “For God so loved the world. . . ”
THE LOVE OF GOD MANIFESTED – “that He gave. . . ”
THE GIFT OF GOD GIVEN – “His only begotten Son. . . ”
THE MERCY OF GOD EXTENDED .”that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish. . . ”
THE GRACE OF GOD BESTOWED – “but have everlasting life.”

What a message to fall on our ears, but what a tragedy it will be to have heard such a message and to die without having accepted the Son of God as your personal Saviour, who is the centre and theme of the verse. Many can look back to a time in their lives when they, by faith took in the truth of the verse, believed on the Son of God and became the possessors of everlasting life. No doubt the writer of the little chorus based the words on this text:

“God gave His Son for me,
Oh, wondrous love.
From sin to set me free,
Oh, wondrous love.
A guilty sinner I,
Doomed and condemned to die,
He did not pass me by,
Oh, wondrous love.”

When God gave His Son it was to the cruel, shameful death of the Cross, that you and I might not perish eternally. He laid down His life a ransom for all, that is the scope of the verse. Whosoever means none are excluded, it takes you in if you feel your need as a sinner.

The apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 2:20, “The Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Many believe wholeheartedly that the Lord Jesus died on the Cross for the whole world, but I wonder can you say personally, as the apostle did, “He loved me and gave Himself for me,” and know the joy and peace of sins forgiven. God spared not His Son. In Romans 8:32 we read “He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?”

The Lord Jesus gave His life for us, “Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree” 1 Peter 2:24.

It is your responsibility to appropriate the death of the Lord Jesus for yourself by receiving Him as your Saviour. It is a personal choice, no one can make it for you and your choice will determine your eternal destiny.
